Today was the Thanksgiving lunch at Emma's school. Last year, I was supposed to go for Maggie's kindergarten Thanksgiving lunch. I was getting ready to go when I noticed the top of the electric pole down by the driveway entrance was broken off and hanging over the driveway. Shortly after that, the driveway was blocked by a cherry-picker and a lot of men in hardhats walking around. I went down to see how long this was going to take, and was told they hoped to get it done by quiting time!
So I didn't get to the Thanksgiving lunch with Maggie. This year, however, nothing untowards happened and I arrived at school in time for the lunch. I don't recall our cafeteria being so noisy when I was in school, but maybe that's because I was part of the noise. Emma was excited to have me there and I was happy to be able to be there. I bought the lunch (she brought hers from home) and we sat down at our designated table. There were other Moms and Dads eating with their kids, too.
The turkey was good and so were the green beans. The mashed potatoes were the reconstituted kind, but with gravy they were edible. The stuffing was not the kind I make, but it wasn't too bad. Emma took a bite of the green beans and some of the potatoes and gravy, but she wasn't about to try the stuffing. When I was in school, all the food was made from scratch and our cooks were the greatest! I realize that it can't be that way now, but one can always wish.
After lunch, we returned to the classroom for a short program. The kids were dressed in grocery-bag outfits (Indian costumes) and headdresses with paper feathers while we had lunch. Now, some of them removed the grocery bags and donned pilgrim hats. There were two Pilgrim men, three Pilgrim women, two Indian men, two Indian women and three turkeys. The boys playing the parts of the turkeys had paper plates with paper feathers stapled around them, taped to their hindermost parts. Extremely cute!!!
While a story was being read by the teacher, the actors had certain lines to recite each time she mentioned Pilgrim men, Pilgrim women, etc. It was very cute. They had to listen to the story to be able to shout out their lines. It was really funny whenever she mentioned "turkeys". The boys turned around and shook their tail feathers while saying "gobble gobble". Emma and the two other girls were Pilgrim women and their line was "Mercy me!" said in falsetto voices. It was quite funny.
A good time was had by all!
