Lunch At School

I had Thanksgiving lunch at school with the granddaughters today. It was pretty much the same as last year's - noisy! First was Emma's lunch at 11:15. I sat with her and ate the first lunch. Where was the cranberry sauce?!? I didn't see it anywhere.

There was no way I was going to eat two lunches, so I planned to just sit with Maggie when her lunch started at 11:25. Emma's teacher hadn't shown up yet to take them back to class, so she sat with us at Maggie's table.

Maggie stole my iced tea so I drank her chocolate milk. I mentioned the fact that there was no cranberry sauce and all the kids at Maggie's table said (screamed) "Yes there is. It's over there on a table outside the lunch line door!" Have I mentioned that it was noisy in there?

One of the little girls at the table started to cry. When I asked her what was wrong, she said she just spotted her mother in the crowd of parents waiting for lunch. I told her she could go see her mother if she wanted to, but she wouldn't do it until the lunchroom lady told her she could. Evidently her mother was there for a sister or brother and couldn't be at two tables at once. It's hard to be seven.

When Emma's teacher finally came, I walked with her back to her classroom. One down, one to go. I waited with Maggie for her teacher to come.

I must say, I wasn't very impressed with this teacher. Maggie wanted to introduce me to her but when she saw us coming (Maggie's smile was a mile wide) she turned her head and didn't "hear" Maggie trying to get her attention. Yeah, I know - it was noisy in there. I figured I'd wait until we got to the classroom; but when we did, the teacher told the kids to sit and put their heads down - no talking! I gave Maggie a kiss and she gave me a drawing she had made. I started to speak to the teacher and tell her who I was, but she didn't even smile as I approached her, so I just left. No warm fuzzies there.

I hope she was just having a bad day.
