Friday Night

Friday night. Time was when Friday night was the "Get dressed! We're going out!" night. Now it's the "Ah-h-h-h! I don't have to go anywhere!" night.

We used to rush home from work. Shower, primp, get all gussied up and out the door we'd go! We'd meet up with friends at a restaurant and go to the movies or a club, or we'd head out to someone's house for a party that would last until morning. Jimmy usually played in a band, so I'd either go with him, or tag along with my friends until he finished and met up with us somewhere.

I think the only times we didn't go out on a Friday night (or Saturday night, for that matter!) were when one of us was sick, or the snow was too deep. People who stayed in on a Friday night were old fogies and way past their prime!! My parents seldom went anywhere, unless it was to the Legion Hall; and then they were back home in bed by 11! His parents didn't even do that! Wow! They were really missing out on life!

Well, I ain't 20 anymore. My ability to stay up all night and function well the next day is long gone. An hour or two of sleep just makes me cranky. When the children came along, I still went to the clubs with him when he played. I would be getting in bed around 3 or 4 in the morning, and get up just fine when the kids woke up. I had no trouble getting in late (or early) on Sunday morning, grab a few hours of sleep and be able to get the kids ready for Sunday school AND stay awake during church service. No problem.

Well, somewhere along the line, I turned 35, then 40, then the 50s hit and now I'm 60! We haven't stayed up to watch the ball drop on New Year's Eve in more years than I can count. We are usually sound asleep long before. It doesn't matter. The next day would be January 1st whether we saw it coming or not.

My pjs are calling me right this minute. My cozy bed is singing its siren song (the classical mythology one, not the fire truck!) and it's only 8 pm on a Friday night.
