Why Do We Care So Much?

He has no marketable skills and won't have any for a long, long time. The girls don't either. They can dance and sing and make things; all he can do is dance and make messes. All three of them require a lot of time and energy just to make sure they'll survive. None of them can fix dinner or drive you to the hospital if you're in need of medical care. We (well, not us exactly) have to spend money on them daily. Shoes, clothes, food, school supplies (yeah, it's that time of year, again!) and we'll (again, not us exactly!) have to do that for more than 18 years.

Why do we put so much time and effort into these (basically) useless people? They're just little kids.

So, what's the big deal here? Why do we care so much?

Because yesterday, for the first time, Alex called me "Nanny" or maybe it was "NaNa" (kinda rhymes with b'nana). My heart sings. He runs to me to be picked up, knowing full well that I will, and has such a look of delight on his beautiful face.

Several times yesterday, he went searching for Jimmy, calling "Popie, Popie". Jimmy was busy building and installing bookcases with Justin, but every time Alex came calling, Jimmy stopped what he was doing for a little "Alex time".

I saw a show on tv the other day. The new father called his mother and said that he never really understood how much she loved him until he held his own newborn daughter.

That's it exactly!
