My Garden

I used to have a very pretty flower garden but lately one small area in the back has developed a huge crop of weeds. I tried pulling out the weeds along with the flowers and replanting, but that's not working. There seems to be something wrong with the soil. We gave up years ago on a vegetable garden. It was too much work and the deer, groundhogs and rabbits were the benefactors. Jimmy doesn't want to do any gardening anymore.

I admit I used a different package of seeds for that area of the garden. It's in a shady, rocky spot and I thought I needed to used another brand, but that's obviously not the problem. I then thought that the little plot was too rocky, so I tried sifting the dirt to get the rocks out. It looked nice and smooth, but soon more rocks gravitated to the surface. I asked a gardener about it and he told me that rocks will do that. I'd have to dig a huge hole to get the remaining rocks out but then where would I get enough fresh soil to refill the hole?

I thought about just leaving that area alone and letting the weeds take over but that goes against the grain, I guess. I wondered if I could put a fence around it so the weeds wouldn't creep into the rest of the garden. The gardener told me that the weeds' roots would just sneak their way (underground) to the rest of the garden and I'd really have a mess. He couldn't tell me how to prevent it, tho. Lot of good he was!

Luckily, the affected area is very small. I don't think it will grow any larger. It's been small for probably as many years as I've had the whole garden. I guess I'll just have to leave it alone and hope for the best. I wanted the garden to look pretty. It compliments the boxwoods that my father-in-law brought from Mt. Vernon. They are cuttings from George's own boxwoods. They are very slow growing, too. A few years ago, my sister, Nancy, gave me two small maple trees to commemorate the births of my two lovely granddaughters. The trees are now tall and beautiful, providing shade and nesting places for the birds. The flower garden is usually full of beautiful butterflies and its so sad to look over and see that little area that is full of some kind of blight.

I'll keep after that gardener. Maybe one day he'll be able to tell me what to do.
