I have had this great idea for some time and I decided I'd go ahead say it. Instead of the political candidates spending all that time and money on their campaigns, I think there should be some constraints applied.
1. $100,000 would be the most any candidate could spend on his/her campaign. Less for local government offices, maybe $20,000 each.
2. Absolutely NO negative statements about the opposition. I don't care if you saw him smoking pot in college. We weren't allowed any negative statements in school when we were putting up our posters for Student Government offices. If any were found, they were taken down. Let's have a clean campaign, folks.
3. One and only one debate on television.
4. Three television ads per candidate, if you still have any of your allowed money (see Rule #1) left. Remember Rule #2. No negative statements about the opposition. Spend your time and money wisely and tell us what you're going to do for us. The last few tv ads I've seen have been Republican bashing Democrat and Democrat bashing Republican. Do you need a time-out?
5. One mailing per candidate. No phone calls, please! And the worst of the phone calls are the automated ones. I can't even tell him to stop calling.
If they all followed these simple rules we'd wouldn't be so glad when it's over.
